These stonewares were not only made in the region of Cizhou, Hebei Province, but in several provinces of China during the Song, Yuan and Ming periods. The great centres of production were in the north of China in the provinces of Hebei, Henan and Shanxi.

Cizhou wares seem to have been very popular, made for a clientèle of rich merchants, at a period when the paintings of famous artists adorned the walls of tea houses of the capital. While this type of pottery did not apparently attract Chinese collectors of the 18th and 19th centuries, it was much appreciated by the Japanese as a kind of folk art, for its rustic look. Nowadays Cizhou fetch very high prices at public auctions.

In the past fifty years, kilns producing Cizhou wares have been identified and excavated. This has made it possible to know the exact origin of certain types and to study the evolution of the ware.

Song potters used several methods of decorating Cizhou: vases, jars, pots, boxes and pillows. Champleve decoration appears at the beginning of the Song period in Henan at Dengfengxian and at Xiuwu. This method consisted of covering the vessel with a white slip, then carving and incising the design as to expose the brown of the body below. The whole surface was then glazed. After firing, the brown of the body formed a striking contrast with that of the glaze covering the white slip. Sometimes the design stands out against a ground of little circles stamped with a metal or bamboo tool. This decoration was often used on Tang metalwork. A variant of the technique used in the 11th century consisted of incising the little circles through the slip, then filling the lines with brick-red paint. The object, generally a pillow or cup, was then glazed. In another type of decoration called sgraffito, two layers of slip were placed one over the other, a brown slip, for example, over a white one, or vice versa over the parts destined for decoration; then the design was drawn by incising and scratching the upper layer, and the whole thing was covered with a transparent glaze.

Reference : Irv Graham

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0676/5297/6896/files/1-Photoroom_1_003d8a52-b8e2-46ec-8fbf-b97e33f73a1e.png?v=1767494146
a-longquan-celadon-five-spouted-jar-northern-song-dynasty-ad-960-1127
Longquan Celadon Five-Spouted Jar, Five Dynasties/Song Dynasty

The vessel is thickly potted, with an ovoid body divided into five horizontal lobes that gently taper toward the top.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0676/5297/6896/files/1-Photoroom_1_8e960822-367d-47c5-8423-690c05905d19.png?v=1767502938
a-molded-qingbai-flowers-dish-southern-song-dynasty
Molded Qingbai 'Flowers' Dish, Southern Song Dynasty

This dish is coated with a transparent bluish-white glaze over a thin white body. The thickness of the glaze, as well as the firing conditions, could affect the final shade and appearance of the celadon, with some pieces exhibiting a more crackled texture and others a smoother, glossier finish.

Longquan celadons were highly prized for their beauty and durability, making them popular both domestically within China and internationally. They were exported widely, reaching as far as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, where they were often considered luxury items and treasured by various cultures.

The designs of Longquan celadon wares varied from simple and elegant forms to more elaborate decorations, including carved or incised motifs inspired by nature, such as lotus flowers, phoenixes, dragons, and foliage. Despite the variations in decoration, the emphasis was always on the harmony between form, glaze, and decoration, with the glaze playing a crucial role in enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the piece.

During the Song Dynasty, Longquan celadon was one of several major types of ceramics produced in China, each with its own distinctive characteristics.

The vessel features a compressed body supported by three tapered feet and a flat, outwardly flaring rim. The creation of these ceramics involved the application of a rich, dark glaze, typically achieved using iron oxide. This glaze was applied over a stoneware or porcelain body, then fired at high temperatures to produce a glossy, dark finish ranging from deep brown to black. Notable techniques included the "tea-dust" glaze, which exhibited a speckled appearance, and the "oil-spot" glaze, characterized by small, iridescent spots. The high-temperature firing process was crucial for achieving the desired glaze effects and durability.

The design of black-glazed ceramics often included intricate carvings, incised, or molded decorations. Common forms included bowls, vases, jars, and ceramic pillows. These pillows, used as headrests, featured detailed designs such as floral patterns, animals, and mythical creatures. An example of this is a black-glazed ceramic pillow from the Jin dynasty, which features carvings of two lions. Similar pieces can be found in the Guanfu Museum, where black-glazed pillows depicting the Twelve Zodiac Animals are displayed. Yaozhou ceramics are distinguished by their olive or brownish-green glaze and the elegant, often spontaneous carving techniques employed in their decoration.

Yaozhou ware typically features carved or incised designs, sometimes with motifs that are impressively detailed. Common themes include floral patterns, such as peonies or chrysanthemums, and more abstract or geometric patterns. The carving is usually done in a 'sgraffito' technique, where the design is carved into the clay and then filled with the glaze, which after firing, reveals the pattern in a contrasting color against the darker body.

The forms of Yaozhou ceramics are often practical – including bowls, dishes, and jars – reflecting their use in daily life as well as for special occasions. The quality of the glaze, which ranges from a matte finish to a more glossy appearance, and the depth of the carving are particular characteristics that help identify Yaozhou wares. The aesthetic appeal of these ceramics lies in the harmony between form, decoration, and glaze, demonstrating the potters' skilled control over their craft.

During the Northern Song period, Yaozhou wares were highly valued and widely used, and they continued to influence Chinese ceramics in subsequent dynasties.
