White-Glazed Chicken-Comb Ewer, Liao Dynasty

A white-glazed chicken-comb ewer fired in late Liao-dynasty, its form derived from leather water flasks and clearly reflecting the culture of nomadic horse-riding peoples. The soft white glaze, generously rounded silhouette, and dense, well-fired clay body exemplify the warm and gentle aesthetic characteristic of Liao.
